The book deals with the fate of synagogue buildings on the territory of tsarist Russia, the Soviet Union, and the Commonwealth of Independent States for the period of a century. The first part covers the beginning of the 20th century until the break-up of the USSR. The second part relates how, in the post-Communist era, some of the synagogues confiscated by the Soviet state are being returned to Jewish communities and gaining a new life. The author leads the reader through the complex of problems connected with this process, stressing the role of the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in regaining and restoring synagogues. The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs, mostly from the collection of the JDC, and many are here published for the first time. The Appendix provides a list of synagogues functioning in the CIS today.
Настоящая книга посвящена судьбе синагогальных зданий на территории СНГ на протяжении прошедшего столетия. Первая ее часть охватывает период от начала 20-го века до распада СССР; вторая – рассказ о том, как в пост-советское время часть конфискованных государством синагог возвращается еврейским общинам и обретает вторую жизнь. Автор вводит читателя в круг проблем, связанных с этим процессом и останавливается на роли Джойнта в деле реституции и ремонта синагог. Книга богато иллюстрирована фотографиями, в основном из коллекции Джойнта; большая часть из них публикуется впервые. В приложении приведен список действующих сегодня синагог СНГ.
