Dr. Gur Zak

Welcome to my site

I am a lecturer in the Department of General and Comparative Literature at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where I have been teaching since 2009. I completed my doctoral degree a year beforehand at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto.
My work focuses on the literature and philosophy of the Italian Renaissance. I am particularly interested in the interrelations between literature and the ethics of care of the self in the period. In addition, I am interested in the history of practices of self-writing in Western culture from antiquity to the modern world. My book Petrarch's Humanism and the Care of the Self was published in 2010 by Cambridge UP.
Currently, I am working on a book project on the cultivation of the self in Renaissance Italy from 1350 to 1550. Examining the works of authors from Giovanni Conversini to Alberti to Gaspara Stampa, I explore especially the relations between gender, literary form, and the ethics of self-care in Renaissance culture.
