Yossi Maurey holds a Ph.D. (2005) in musicology from the University of Chicago, and serves as Assistant Professor at the Department of Musicology at the Hebrew University since 2008. He specializes in medieval sacred music, liturgy, and ritual, and has a special interest in the confluence of theology, music, manuscript culture and ideology. Among his recent publications are included essays on Guillaume de Machaut (Early Music History), on the meaning of the feast of Corpus Christi in medieval Saint-Martin of Tours (Acta Musicologica), on nostalgia, gender, and politics in the music of Dana International (Popular Music), and most recently, on the practice of musical elaboration in "Gregorian" chant (Études grégoriennes). Recipient of various grants from the Medieval Academy of America, the American Musicological Society, and from Yad Hanadiv (The Rothschild Fund), he has been awarded a three-year grant (2009-2012) from the Israel Science Foundation for a study of the Apotheosis of St Martin in the Middle Ages in ritual and chant. He presented his work in numerous conferences, including the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, the International Medieval Studies conference in Leeds, and at the Med/Ren, and has co-organized a conference on Bishop-Saints and their Cities which took place in France in June 2010. During the academic year 2009/2010, Yossi was a research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies (Le Studium), in residence at the Université François Rabelais, Tours. His book Historia Sancti Gatiani, Episcopi Turonensis was published in the series Historiae in 2014, and his book on St Martin in Music, Ritual and Hagiography: The Local Foundations of a Universal Saint, is forthcoming in Cambridge University Press (2014).
