The publishing of the ‘The American Brother: the “Joint” in Russia, the USSR and the CIS’ coincided with an exhibition by the same name that was held in October – November 2004 at the Moscow House of Photography and marked the 90th Anniversary of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), known the world over simply as the “Joint”. In a concise format, the book tells the entire history of the Joint’s involvement in helping Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet Jews, from World War I until present day. JDC relief to the victims of pogroms during the Russian Civil War, rescue from famine in the first years of Lenin’s New Economic Policy, caring for the orphans and the elderly, large-scale agricultural resettlement of the Jews in the 1920-1930s, food package program that ran for decades after the World War II and finally, welfare programs and community building of today - all are narrated visually and textually in the book. The book contains some 250 photographs and documents from dozens of archives and personal collections – primarily the archives of the JDC headquarters in New York and Jerusalem, the Archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem, and various archives in Moscow and the Ukraine. For most of these photographs, this is a first publishing ever. In the album, the reader will not only find photographic illustrations to the history of the Joint’s caring and doing, but also the images of those who devoted themselves to the cause of helping, defying frequent hardship and danger to their lives, personal wellbeing and safety – JDC workers, its leaders and its donors.
Книга-фотоальбом "Американский брат: Джойнт в России, СССР и СНГ" выпущена к одноименной выставке, прошедшей в октябре-ноябре 2004 года в Московском Доме Фотографии и приуроченной к 90-летию со дня основания Американского Еврейского Объединенного распределительного Комитета, известного всему миру под именем "Джойнт". В книге в сжатой форме впервые представлена вся история помощи Джойнта российскому, советскому и постсоветскому еврейству начиная с первой мировой войны до наших дней. Помощь Джойнта жертвам погромов в годы гражданской войны, спасение голодающих в первые годы нэпа, забота о сиротах и престарелых, масштабная аграризация местечковых евреев в 20-е и 30-е годы, многолетняя посылочная программа в послевоенный период, и, наконец, социальная помощь и общинное строительство последних лет – все это отражено в книге визуально и текстуально. В альбоме использовано около 250 фотографий и документов из двух десятков архивов и частных собраний, в первую очередь – Нью-йоркского и Иерусалимского архивов Джойнта, Архива Института ИВО (Нью-Йорк), Центрального сионистского архива в Иерусалиме, а также московских и украинских архивов. Большая их часть публикуется впервые. В альбоме читатель найдет не только фотоиллюстрации к вышеназванной деятельности, но и образы тех, кто помогал, нередко в трудных условиях, порой рискуя своим здоровьем и безопасностью, – работников Джойнта, а также его руководителей и жертвователей.
