Ladino Program At The Center for the Study of Jewish Languages and Literatures
The program in Ladino Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was established in 1980 by David M. Bunis. Today Ladino Studies constitute a subdivision of the university’s Center for the Study of Jewish Languages and Literatures, which, since its founding in 1985, has been directed by Moshe Bar-Asher, and is coordinated by Ofra Tirosh-Becker. The Center offers undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on Ladino language, linguistics, literature, and folklore. Undergraduate students may specialize in Ladino as part of a B.A. program in Jewish Languages and Literatures. Graduate students may design a personal program in Ladino Studies leading to the M.A. and PhD. degrees. In addition to its course offerings in Ladino and other Jewish languages, the Center for the Study of Jewish Languages and Literatures annually offers a three - or four-session workshop on Jewish languages, and bi-annually co-sponsors an international conference on topics such as Jewish languages in contact with Hebrew, and Jewish languages as sacred-text translation languages. Research on Jewish languages is published in the Center’s Hebrew-language journal, Massorot, and in monographs issued by the Center in co-operation with the Bialik Institute and other scholarly organizations.
