Adventures in TMR

Prologue (A part of a letter written to our friends less than a month before the trip).

"In the beginning of summer 2001 Tali and I decide to walk a 13 days trek around the Monte Rosa (in Italy) and the Matterhorn (in Switzerland). This trek is called in short TMR (Tour Monte Rosa). It's the first time we're trekking in Europe and we're quite fascinated about it. For sure the scenery won't equal the Himalayas or the Andes but the area is very mountainous and I guess I don't need to mention the beauties of the Matterhorn which is the famous pyramid-shaped mountain seen on the wrappings of Swiss chocolates. We intend to sleep in Hornlihutte at 3,300m' which is built on one of the edges of the Matterhorn. This hut serves as a base camp for the climbers who go till the top, at 4,476m'. Later in the trek, a couple of Swiss friends will join us. Together we will try to conquer the summit of Alphubel at 4,206m'.

Monte Rosa 4,554m'.

Another nice aspect of our future trek is the comfort. The starting point of the trek is less than 100Km. from Malpensa airport of Milan. Thus, with the aid of the well developed public transport, we can start trekking only few hours after we land. When in the Andes/Himalayas it took us days to arrive to the trekking areas (because transport is so undeveloped) and then we needed to wait at least one more week in order to acclimatize to the heights. Here in Europe the height shouldn't cause a problem. Also, here every day or two we will pass through a village where we will be able to buy fresh excellent food (e.g., Swiss chocolate and cheese and Italian food and wine...).

The Matterhorn (Cervino) 4,476m'.

What we may miss in this trek is the colorful population of the developing countries as Peru and Nepal . Fortunately, we won't miss them too long as later on, in the middle of September, we intend to go for one and a half month to the Gangotri area in India . Gangotri is the location of the source of the holy Ganges river and the site of the highest mountain in India, the Nanda Devi, at 7,816m'. It should be a very nice journey. "
