Panoramic photography is a special kind of photography where one achieves very wide angles of view (up to a full circle of 360 degrees) by collating normal frame photos together. The ways of making panoramic photography are diverse: 360 degrees cinema movies are usually made by installing 9 coordinated cameras on a helicopter in a circle. For stills photography there exist special panoramic cameras which can take wide angles of up to 180 degrees. I make my panoramic photos by taking between 2 to 15(!) photos in a sequence. On one hand it is impossible to obtain a perfect matching (due to movements of clouds, different illumination angles etc.), but on the other hand, one can use the extra time dimension in order to multiply objects (people, for instance) and in the overall get technically an imperfect photo, but artistically, an interesting one. You can see some examples of Assaf Zomet and other examples by Pete Fagerlin.
About the artist I'm a member of the Israeli association of artistic photography specializing in panoramic photography since 1988. As far as I know, I'm the only panoramic photographer in Israel, and I assume, one of a very few in the world. As I'm a student in Tel Aviv university, my wife and I can take advantage of the long summer vacations and travel frequently abroad for trekking in difficult mountainous areas (like South America and Africa) where I take pictures. Later on we make exhibitions and show the photos in public...
About the exhibition: "Volcanoes of The
World" is my newest exhibition
which took place between 18/5/03 and 30/5/03 in the central library of
Tel Aviv university and between 15/07/03 and 25/10/03 in the national museum of science in Haifa. In year 2004, it was exhibited between the 2/4/04 and 22/4/04 in BEIT YAD LEBANIM in Ramat Hasharon. It consists of panoramic photos of more than 20 volcanoes from 14 countries (Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Spain, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Israel).
The sponsors of this exhibition are the Greek governmental tourist board and the Chilean embassy in Israel.
The exhibition is planned to be shown in various cities in Israel throughout 2004.
The photo is of the Island of Santorini in Greece, which is an active volcano.
